Acetyl chloride is mainly used in the preparation and production of organic compound, dye and drugs. Industrially, acetyl chloride is produced by the reaction of ketene with hydrogen chloride or of sodium acetate, sulfur dioxide and chlorine. It can also be synthesized in the laboratory by the reaction of acetic acid, sodium acetic acid or acetic anhydride with various chlorodehydrating agents. Acetyl chloride is widely used as an important acetylation agent in organic synthesis, owing to its even better ability of acylation than acetic anhydride. Acetyl chloride serves as the catalyst for carboxylic acid chlorination, and used in the quantitative analysis of hydroxyl and amino.

     As an important organic synthesis intermediate acetylation agent, acid chlorination is widely used in the production of pesticide, pharmaceuticals, new electroplating compexing agent and many other organic synthesis intermediates. Its major usage in the pharmaceutical field is as raw material of 2, 4 - dichloro - 5 - fluorine acetophenone (Ciprofloxacin intermediate) and ibuprofen, etc.

Closed operations,adequate local exhaust ventilation, explosion-proof ventilation system and equipment. Handling personnel must attend professional training and operate strictly according to operating instructions. Recommend wearing filter type gas mask, self-contained breathing apparatus, rubber protective clothing and rubber oil resistant gloves. Keep from fire and heat. No smoking in workplace. Avoid fuming, and prevent the release of fume and vapor into the air. Avoid contact with oxidant, alcohols and water in particular.
